Do we have your attention?! The girls, the glamour, the gowns, that’s all nice, but come on…for us, it’s really about the hair! And what we learned from the CHI styling team this year is that the biggest story is an asymmetrical bob! And the color? Well, some new hues took the stage, as well! The Miss Universe competition was fierce this year, and Team BTC was backstage in Miami, FL getting the lowdown on all the hair happenings leading up to the big night. Here’s everything you need to know!
1. A CHI ARMY STYLED 88 GIRLS AND JUDGES
styled 88 girls—plus the hosts, judges and reigning misses—for the competition.Lead Stylist Tammy Mixon says each stylist had only 20 to 30 minutes to perfect a contestant’s look before she took the stage!
2. CHI RELEASED A NEW MISS UNIVERSE STYLING LINE
This year marked the launch of the very first Miss Universe Style Illuminate line by CHI—a new collection featuring six styling products and four professional styling tools designed to allow women the convenience of molding several styles in one day (similar to a Miss U competition!). For Va Va Voom volume and captivating curls, all of the Miss Universe contestants were styled using this new line.
3. A SHORT STYLE TOOK HOME THE “HAIR” CROWN THIS YEAR!
Speaking of Va Va Voom…it’s true, typical pageant hair usually involves long, volumized Victoria’s Secret waves. But this year, three contestants sported shorter, more nontraditional pageant styles—Miss Germany with a trendy, asymmetrical bob, Miss Ghana with a Lupita Nyong’o-inspired textured fade and Miss Jamaica with aHalle Berry-eque soft crop.
4. PERFECT BUN TO ASYMMETRIC BOB? YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!
Two years ago, it was Miss Universe Olivia Culpo’s romantic bun that stole the show and inspired a wave of admirers to replicate her look. This year, Tammy andCHI Stylist and Vice President of Education, Lisa Marie Garcia, predict Miss Germany’s asymmetrical bob will take over as reigning trendsetter. “I like seeing girls with short hair because I think you can be just as beautiful and sexy with short hair as you can long hair,” says Tammy. “She has shown all the different ways you can wear a bob, so she could definitely be a trendsetter this year.”
5. RED TAKES CENTER STAGE, AS DOES OMBRE!
Generally, Miss Universe contestants are known to play it safe when it comes to their haircolor. But this year, we finally started to see some different hues! “Look for reds, a few ombrés and some deeper, richer blondes that are not so overly highlighted and bleached!” says Lisa Marie.
And now…it’s time for a styling tip from CHI Stylist Anna Cantu with Miss USAherself!
