Black History Month celebrates the incredible historical contributions of African Americans who have played an essential role in shaping American culture. It is also a chance to listen, learn, and recognize individuals who contribute to the conglomerate of the Farouk Systems, Inc. company culture. The haircare giant prides itself on fostering a pervasive culture of inclusivity and diversity so, in honor of Black History Month, it wants to by shine a light on company employees and hairdressers who make a difference — not just this month, but all year round.

Known for captivating audiences with high energy presentations, George Cooper has set foot on national and international stages to educate and entertain industry professionals with his stylized cutting techniques that channel the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson.

Cooper joined Farouk Systems, Inc. over decade ago and his creativity and skills have landed him the opportunity to style for red carpet events and editorial shoots. However, it’s his contribution to his community that is truly heartwarming. In 2006, he funded and built a playground for his childhood community – complete with an area to run track and play softball, volleyball, soccer, or flag football.

“Growing up, we didn’t have anywhere to play outside so I went back there as an adult to make sure that wouldn’t be the case for other children,” said Cooper.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

“I want everyone to know that Black culture is multicultural,” said Cooper. “Black culture is not proprietary to black people but to all people to recognize the beauty that is within. As a society, we need to establish a sense of belonging for everyone to focus on helping all individuals thrive. It’s all about reconsidering stereotypes while thinking about whose voices are and are not represented. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate and learn about a community that is full of talent, resilience, and beauty.”

Chauné Fitzgerald is an artistic visionary who customizes her precision cutting and hair color services to her fit clients’ needs. Fitzgerald has travelled the world with Farouk Systems, Inc. teaching other salon professionals the avant-garde techniques and the latest hair trends. She is currently ranked among the Elite educators and continues to grow in her field.

In addition to owning Salon Remedi and Own Your Business in Richland, WA, Fitzgerald is the founder of the local non-profit Women of Wisdom Tri-Cities (WOW Tri-Cities), which assists minority-owned businesses. Her unwavering commitment to community service also earned her the 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit Award from Columbia Basin College.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

“It’s a time of reflecting the past and embracing the future knowing that all things are possible,” said Fitzgerald. “I use this time to recognize those who paved the way and helped to shape America with their contributions.  Embracing diverse thinking, experiences and creating an environment where everyone feels relevant can ensure we are all part of the shared mission towards inclusion and equality.”

At Farouk Systems, Inc., John Long is responsible for directing and driving results for all areas of operation, including manufacturing, supply chain, information technology, and logistics in support of innovation, quality, cost, and productivity objectives. His problem-solving skills deliver solutions through strategic planning.

In his spare time, however, he volunteers in a ministry that supports the feeding and clothing of the homeless individuals in Houston, TX.

“My family has joined me at times, and this has allowed me to show my children what is actually important in life,” said Long.

When asked to reflect on a role model who has made an impact in his life, he named his father John L. Long.

“My dad honorably served in WWII on the USS Bunker Hill,” said Long. “During one battle, his aircraft carrier was attacked by two Kamikaze planes killing over 400 sailors.  He and his crew mates saved the ship from sinking and continued the fight.  He valued education and ensured all five of his children received college education.  He was wise and, although he died over a decade ago, his words of advice ring truer to me every day,” he added.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

“It’s a time for all of us to reflect on the contributions of African Americans over the centuries,” said Long. “The story of America cannot be accurately told without including the struggles, perseverance, and triumphs of the African American people,” he concluded. 

With over 12 years of experience at Farouk Systems, Inc., Kewonia Grimes worked her way up from an educator to master stylist. She is also a regional sales manager, lead texture specialist, creative artistic platform artist, salon owner and mentor.

“What I enjoy the most [about being a hairdresser] is turning frowns to smiles,” said Grimes. “We have people that come in that really are down but when they leave, it’s like you’ve changed their whole life after doing their hair,” she added. 

Grimes draws inspiration from various influential people, including pioneers like Madame C.J. Walker who invented a line of African American hair products and was the first Black woman millionaire in America.

“If you can make something out of nothing and still be able to thrive, you’ve done something great. She was one of my idols because I like her drive and what she created in this industry.”

What does Black History Month mean to you?

“It highlights the strength and power we have inside of us,” said Grimes. “I say that because we’ve come a long way historically, and I love to see the impact we are making as African Americans,” she said.

At Farouk Systems, Inc., Myreon Wallace manages plant operations, directing all manufacturing personnel and operating units.  He has been with the company for three years and enjoys working collaboratively with the team to complete tasks and meet challenges.   

“I’m responsible for converting raw materials into finished products in a safe, sanitary, cost-effective, and efficient manner to meet company standards,” said Wallace. “[I work to] lead and drive productivity-saving initiatives, continuous improvement projects, and lean production operations throughout the plant,” he said.

Outside of his work at Farouk Systems, Inc., Wallace takes the time pursue volunteering opportunities in his community through his church and serves as a speaker at his alma mater Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

“Black History Month means acknowledgement of some the great people and accomplishments that have and are still occurring in our society,” said Wallace. “There have been many African American pioneers who have inspired me, including the trailblazing [inventor] Garret Morgan. [His patents include] a hair straightening product, a breathing device and an improved traffic signal. When you can visualize your thoughts and dreams and then have the patience and fortitude to bring it to life… wow!”
