When Kára McCullough won the Miss USA crown last night, she was put in the spotlight for some problematic comments on healthcare and feminism. While speaking during the pageant’s Q&A section, Kára asserted her beliefs that health care was a privilege (as opposed to a right) and attempted to distance herself from the word “feminism.” While social media reactions called her out for inflammatory words, one of her choices during the night is receiving much more positive reception.
“I decided to embrace what made me feel comfortable, embrace what makes me feel the best and brightest on stage,” she told the publication. “I didn’t see anyone in competitions with my hairstyle.” While she added that she was nervous about the reception — not knowing how people would react — she was ultimately gratified by how she felt after embracing her natural texture. “People are happy I am following my heart,” she said.
